CV Writing Tips

A Young Man Writing

Profile: Start with a short concise profile of your key skills, if the role requires specific skills and you have them… adapt your CV to reflect this. It’s a great way to highlight your reasons for the application, as well as injecting some personality to your CV.

Format: A simple Word or PDF format is best. Photos should be professional if used and not your favourite selfie, you are looking for a new career not a new friend (that’s comes once you have the job).

If a PDF CV, always have a Word version available too. If you are using an agency many will format your CV to accommodate with removing personal details and adding specifics such as salary expectations and notice periods (help us out).

Content: Highlight key skills and examples of success within your previous roles. Start with your most previous role and work backwards, employers don’t want to see your first role at the top of your CV.

Use bullet points and short paragraphs for an easy read. In your education sector, put your highest and/or most recent qualification from the top and again work backwards.

If you have the JD, Compare your skills and experience to it, no harm in tailoring your CV to the role you have your heart set on… selling yourself on paper can be difficult so make the most of what you have!
